Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 12, 2018 (SKNIS): Young people in St. Kitts and Nevis will speak directly to their peers in a bid to promote positive behavioural change as it relates to youth involvement in domestic violence, gun-related crimes and other types of antisocial activities.

The Department of Youth Empowerment is working with several partners including youth groups, members of the 25 Most Remarkable Teens 2017 class, the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, and the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service, to produce a number of public service announcements (PSAs) that express views on crime and violence.

Maluska Lapsey of the Department of Youth Empowerment said that most crimes involving guns are committed by young people. She also referred to a growing number of troubling incidences such as fights or attacks that target women, with some circulating on social media over the past months.

“We need all of that to stop,” Ms. Lapsey stated. “Society needs to know the worth of women so we are putting that out to the general public.”

The messages are being crafted primarily by members of the department’s volunteer corps. The appeals will air on local radio and television stations and officials are targeting the end of March to launch them.

Ms. Lapsey said that as part of this initiative, a candlelight vigil will also be held. Victims and persons impacted by violence will be allowed to share their stories during the event. Additional information will be provided in a follow up press release. To participate in the event, visit the Department of Youth Empowerment located on the top floor of The Cable Building or telephone 662-6054.
