It was High Tea good times on Saturday at the St. Christopher Children’s Home. The children hosted an old-fashioned English tea party, with finger sandwiches, dainty china cups and all the formality of an English High Tea. Among their guests were a small number of current volunteers and former residents of the home. The Tea Party gave the children of the Home a prime opportunity to practice their recently learnt social graces and show off the Home’s improvements – among which is the new industrial kitchen, as well as preview of the long anticipated Garden Project. Part of the long-term goals are to encourage more mentorship, volunteerism and develop a bond between former residents and the current residents.
Each guest was asked to bring a flowering, fruit or vegetable plant which will be used for the Home’s Garden Project and add to the curb appeal. This project will teach the children about conserving and rehabilitating their environment while improving the well-being of their community.
The Garden Project was funded by the GEF Small Grants Programme. The GEF Small Grants Programme (GEF) was established in 1992 and embodies the very essence of sustainable development by “thinking globally acting locally”. GEF provides financial and technical support to projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing people’s well-being and livelihoods. Projects such as this “demonstrates that community action can maintain the fine balance between human needs and environmental imperatives.”
While this was a festive occasion to thank the members and volunteers who give so generously of their time and resources the event also provided the opportunity to provide information on an upcoming Fundraiser to be held on Thursday, 31 May 2018 from 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm at the Sky Ultra Lounge in the Marriott Hotel. This event, one of a number planned to help meet the shortfall from the 2017 Walk Run Fund Raiser is entitled “Martinis in Style,” will include a fashion show spotlighting local designers
