BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 17, 2018 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Minister responsible for Public Infrastructure, Post, Urban Development and Transport, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, has come in for high praise for the work being undertaken by his ministries to enhance the physical infrastructure around the country.

Addressing the Seabed Breaking Ceremony hosted by the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority on Tuesday, May 16, Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, said Minister Liburd must be recognized for his direct attention to the construction of the second cruise pier, addressing the dilapidation of key public sector buildings and for his commitment to improve the road network throughout the length and breadth of the country.

“As we met the various buildings inadequate and unfit for purpose, it is the Minister of Public Infrastructure to whom we turned, and the Public Works Department, to ensure that we consecrate the future,” Prime Minister Harris said.

Additionally, work has commenced to transform the former site of the Public Works Department Vehicle Maintenance Division into the new East Bus Line Terminal at Wellington Road. The PWD’s Vehicle Maintenance Division has since been moved to the compound of the former St. Kitts Sugar Manufacturing Corporation (SSMC).

“I say thank you to Minister Liburd for the roads to come, the second cruise pier, the Basseterre High School, which must be delivered [and] the improvement in our infrastructure everywhere, and to say his performance represents the performance of an entire team which the people voted for,” Dr. Harris added, noting that the value and substance of the work of the Team Unity administration can be seen and felt in every sector.

In March of this year, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis signed contracts with five local contractors, namely Allie Construction, Boonies Construction, B&B Ltd., Huggins and Son Construction and O’Loughlin Construction and thanked them for their participation in the first phase of the island main road rehabilitation project.

The first phase of the rehabilitation work, which is expected to commence shortly, will begin at the Airport Roundabout going eastward to Keys Village. A second set of work will take place simultaneously at the Camps’ Roundabout heading west down to the Challengers community.
