Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 29, 2018 (SKNIS): Work is continuing apace throughout every affected community in St. Kitts to repair roofs that were damaged during Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
According to Osbert DeSuza, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, who is spearheading the project, over 400 homes have been repaired with work going on every week with several small contractors and close to 200 workers in carrying out the much needed project.
The Government is providing the roofing materials and financing the labour costs to those affected through the Office of the Prime Minister with support and guidance from the Ministries of Social Development and Sustainable Development.
Homeowners have applauded the Government for its work of bringing relief to their discomfort of having leaky roofs susceptible to the natural elements, especially with the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season underway.
According to figures released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), there were 1,114 reported cases of homeowners with damaged roofs to varying degrees throughout St. Kitts due to the tropical cyclones. The official 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1.
