Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 12, 2018 (SKNIS): Secretary General of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), Bernadette Lewis, while speaking on the September 12 edition of “Working For You”, said that a number of critical issues, key developments and trends in information technology will be discussed at the 17th Caribbean Ministerial Strategic Information and communications technology (ICT) Seminar from September 26 –27. This seminar will be a part of the ICT Week of Activities in St. Kitts and Nevis to be held at the St. Kitts Marriott and Royal Beach Casino from September 24 – 28, 2018.

Secretary General Lewis noted that the first Ministerial Seminar, which was held in 2004 laid the foundation for the understanding of ICT, its evolution and implications within the region. She said that some of the expected outcomes from the seminar are understanding the principles of a 21stCentury Government, a greater insight into emerging connectivity and resilient communication technologies, understanding why new policy and regulatory approaches are necessary, fostering ICTs-enabled development and committing to using information and communications technologies effectively.

“It is designed to lay a common foundation of the understanding of ICTs, how they are evolving and to point to the technologies that are emerging, and to speak to the implications of the technological evolution on things like policy, legislation, and regulation,” she added.

She thank the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis for hosting the upcoming seminar and stated that these seminars are important for government ministers from around the region to come together to discuss how technology can be used to foster national and regional development.

“ICT Week is an opportunity for St. Kitts and Nevis to really demonstrate their commitment to ICT enabled social and economic development.  We are thankful that the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis agreed to host ICT Week as it is a reflection of their understanding of the role that ICT plays in the future development of St. Kitts and Nevis,” she said.

The theme for this year’s seminar is “21st Century Government – Enhancing Connections and Accelerating Progress.”
