Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 18, 2018 (SKNIS): In his wrap up of the 2019 Budget Debate, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, accused the Leader of the Opposition, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, of selling out his country by promoting the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme of Dominica over his country’s own.

“Something is wrong with that leadership,” Prime Minister Harris said of Dr. Douglas.

After months of denial, Dr. Douglas finally admitted in a sworn affidavit filed in the High Court Registry on February 21, 2018, that he filled out an application form and was issued with a diplomatic passport (0000462) of the Commonwealth of Dominica, which he has used to travel.

Dr. Douglas’ legitimacy as a Member of Parliament is in question as the Attorney General in the Dr. Harris-led Team Unity Administration has taken him to court to answer the charge that he’s in breach of the St. Kitts and Nevis Constitution.

Section 28 (1) of the Constitution of St. Christopher and Nevis and Section Six (6) of the National Assemblies Act both provide that “a person shall not be qualified to be elected or appointed as a member if he is by virtue of his own act under any acknowledgment of allegiance, obedience or adherence to a foreign power or state”, said the Attorney General.

Additionally, Prime Minister Harris has questioned the seriousness of the opposition leader and his candidates and executives in recently signing an ethical code of conduct when he doesn’t see any change in their behaviour. Prime Minister Harris, in calling the signing a charade, said they’re “not serious about ethics and politics.”

They were at their “unethical best while in government”, said Prime Minister Harris, while adding that a Motion of No Confidence was in abeyance for 27 months by the Dr. Douglas Administration.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Harris questioned how ethical the leader of the opposition could be when the United States government revoked his US Visa and to this day has not granted him one.

He is the only prime minister I know that has been “denied a US Visa as a sitting prime minister,” said Prime Minister Harris.
