A holder of the Medal of Honour awarded in the year 2000, ELSTON NERO also known as “ELLIE MATT” is not only a Legend nationally but regionally and internationally. He can be described as one of the Caribbean’s most gifted and celebrated musical icons. Introduced to a musical career at the age of eight (8), this self-taught musician has composed over one hundred (100) songs.
His story hails his rise to musical fame and the designation of MAESTRO and leader of a Band to rival any other anywhere. Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass dominated the musical landscape for over two (2) decades.
A ten (10) time Calypso King and a seven (7) time Road March winner, King Ellie Matt every year produced classic calypsos such as ‘I love St Kitts – Viva St Kitts’ played every morning at 7:30 am on ZIZ Radio.
In 1973 his Band won the Caribbean Brass-O-Rama competition. In 2016 the Organization of American States (OAS) in pursuance of a United Nations Resolution declaring the ‘Decade of People of African Descent’ Ellie Matt was listed as among persons in the Americas who have excelled in the Arts and Culture with their contributions being recognized nationally or hemispherically.
He has also been inducted into the International Soca Hall of Fame.
