Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 16, 2019 (SKNIS): As part of her first official State Visit to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Her Excellency Dr. Tsai Ing-wen, visited the Christena Memorial at the waterfront of Charlestown, Nevis on Sunday, July 14.

While there, H.E. Dr. Tsai laid a wreath to show her respects to those who lost their lives during the MV Christena ferry disaster of August 01, 1970.

The Christena disaster was a catastrophe in St. Kitts and Nevis where the MV Christena sank in The Narrows between the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis after encountering difficulty. More than 300 persons were on board including Nevisians, Kittitians and visitors to St. Kitts and Nevis. Two hundred and thirty-three (233) persons perished and 90 survived.

The Christena Memorial, located on the waterfront of Charlestown, was dedicated on August 01, 2011, 41 years later, giving citizens, residents and even visitors a central location to pay their respects to the lives lost during this disaster.

President Tsai also made a visit to the Alexander Hamilton Museum, the Museum of Nevis History.
