Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 16, 2019 (SKNIS): A tree commemorating the July 13 to 16, 2019 State Visit of President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Her Excellency Dr. Tsai Ing-wen to St. Kitts and Nevis was planted at Government House on Monday, July 15, 2019.

President Tsai helped to place the young tree into the ground and used a shovel to cover the roots with soil from a small mound nearby. The activity was witnessed by Governor General His Excellency Sir S. W. Tapley Seaton and Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris. A plaque was also unveiled on the spot to mark the occasion.

The tree planting is symbolic of the future growth and deepening of the relationship between the ROC (Taiwan) and St. Kitts and Nevis. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established in 1983 when St. Kitts and Nevis gained Independence from Britain.

The bonds of friendship between the longstanding allies were hailed by Sir Tapley at a ceremony at Government House that followed the tree planting.

He noted that the activity symbolised “a renewal of the relationship between the two countries” while “cementing for perpetuity the roots which bind our two countries together.”

“We look forward to its growth just as the relationship between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan will continue to grow,” Governor General Sir Tapley stated.

The ROC (Taiwan) has made tremendous contributions to the Federation in several areas including national security, information and communication technology, public infrastructure, education, sport, agriculture, healthcare and many more.

President Tsai departed St. Kitts on Tuesday morning (July 16) for similar visits to St. Vincent and the Grenadines from July 16 to 17, and then Saint Lucia from July 19 to 21.
