BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, February 03, 2021 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Though the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis has recorded commendable successes in its fight to contain the Novel Coronavirus, the country’s Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris is urging citizens and residents to continue their adherence to the established protocols and measures as the fight is not yet over.
“In St Kitts and Nevis, we are at a critical juncture in our management of the COVID-19 pandemic. We still face the worst crisis of a lifetime. Indeed, we face two crises – one a health pandemic that has taken about 2.24 million lives and the other a brutal economic crisis that has caused 114 million direct job losses worldwide and reduced working hours,” Prime Minister Harris said.
Speakingduring the first Leadership Matters programme for the year on Tuesday, February 02, Prime Minister Harris said his Government’s focus remains on protecting the health, jobs, and the way of life of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Theprime minister noted however that to accomplish this, each citizen and resident of the Federation must do his or her part by abiding by the internationally accepted guidelines that remain in place.
“The country is still counting on you and you have to, by your own example, comply with the protocols and encourage others to do so. We have to again rekindle the sense of urgency in the compliance with the protocols that are now available and well known – the wearing of the mask, the frequent hand hygiene, and of course the physical distancing, all these have helped us to contain the virus in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Prime Minister Harris.
Asa result of its participation in the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access Facility (COVAX), it is expected that St. Kitts and Nevis will have access to vaccines in the second quarter of 2021.
PrimeMinister Harris indicated that the Government’s target is to have at least 70 percent of the population vaccinated but stated that “until the all clear is given, each of us has to do our very best” to keep each other and the country safe.
