Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 09, 2021 (SKNIS): Deputy Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Honourable Shawn Richards, congratulated and commended the Republic of China (Taiwan) on its 110th National Day which is observed on October 10 annually.

“As Taiwan is celebrating its National Day, I bring greetings, commendations and congratulations on behalf of all of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. Ambassador, I would want on behalf of the Government and the people for you to extend congratulations from the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Deputy Prime Minister Richards, while delivering a brief message on Saturday, October 09, following a beach cleanup at South Friar’s Bay in celebration of Taiwan’s 110th National Day.

Minister Richards reflected on the 38 years of the strong and fruitful relationship between both countries.

“Taiwan has assisted us in so many spheres of our development. Whether we want to look at healthcare, education, agriculture, ICT, or the environment, the footprints of Taiwan are very much here with the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said the Deputy Prime Minister. “Certainly, we don’t have the very same resources as Taiwan but we not only are happy for the relationship because it is one that shows that Taiwan is dedicated, committed and a reliable friend and so that is why at the very highest level, the UN Meeting, for example, which would have just taken place, we were quite happy to advocate on behalf of Taiwan.”

Deputy Prime Minister Richards noted that once Taiwan is “given a seat at the highest table” the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis will reap greater benefits.

Commenting on the beach cleanup, Deputy Prime Minister Richards said it was a welcomed initiative and of great significance.

“This morning’s beach cleanup is one that we consider to be very significant. You have assisted in so many different spheres of our development but I do believe an activity such as this says to us the people of St. Kitts and Nevis that it is not just about giving some of your financial and technical expertise, but as a true friend you have an interest in seeing St. Kitts and Nevis being kept clean and beautiful,” said Deputy Prime Minister Richards. “Therefore, the beach cleanup activity has greatly assisted us with doing that especially at a time when we endeavour to bring back the tourists here to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.
