BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, September 26, 2022 (SKNIS): On Friday, September 23, 2022, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Hon. Dr. Terrance M. Drew delivered his first addressat the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) having assumed the office after the August 5, 2022 General Election.. Prime Minister Dr. Drew took the opportunity to call for greater support for the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the removal of the decades trade embargo imposed on Cuba.

“Mr. President, we are stronger in the company of our friends, particularly those who share our democratic principles and values.  In this body of nations, I re-emphasize our unswerving support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system. Taiwan has been a long-standing friend and a partner for sustainable development.  Their unfailing commitment in this regard since the very day of my country’s independence is consistent with the spirit and intent of Goal 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Prime Minister Dr. Drew.

Most recently, hostilities in the South China Sea have brought the struggle of the Taiwanese people within the scope of many international actors, with the Taiwan government calling for a cease of all forms of hostility.  Further, Prime Minister Dr. Drew who is a Cuban trained medical doctor said he is aware of the contribution the Republic of Cuba continues to make to regional development and called for an end to the decades long trade embargo inflicted on the country by the United States.

“I can speak first-hand to our friendship with the Republic of Cuba and what it means to me and its value to the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Cuba has partnered with my own country and many in the developing world in healthcare, education, training and agriculture. We call for an end to the decades long embargo imposed against Cuba. My country encourages meaningful dialogue in resolving these and other conflicts in countries that are targeted by unfair sanctions that create enduring external and internal hardships,” said Prime Minister Dr. Drew.

Prime Minister Dr. Drew also called for greater collaboration in an effort to foster global peace and security as nations around the world attempt to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic.
