Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 14, 2022 (SKNIS): The establishment of the new Ministry of Youth, Aging and Disabilities and the allocation of over $2.2 million to fund its first year of operation in 2023 is a key takeaway from the first Budget presentation by St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew.

Dr. Drew told members of the Federal Parliament and stakeholders from all walks of life, who convened at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort Ball Room for the Sitting of the National Assembly on December 14, 2022, that the formation of the new ministry is in keeping with the government’s vision to chart a better course to address inequalities and inequities that threaten to divide society.

Madam Speaker, I remember when I was young, our elderly folk used to be held in high regard,” he stated. “We have seen the decline of that over the years and that is why we have committed to creating the Ministry of Aging that as our population ages they must know that this government will respond to their needs.”

“We know those who are differently-abled, Madam Speaker, they too must be given the opportunities in this country to explore, advance, and also dream and live out their dreams,” the Prime Minister added.

It will be the mandate of the new ministry to support, empower and pay special attention to the issues related to some of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens and residents.

“We believe that the work of this Ministry would lead to significant improvements in the lives of our youth, elderly and differently-abled citizens and residents,” Prime Minister Drew stated.
The formation of the new ministry is part of the government’s commitment to achieving the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as well as the local Sustainable Island State Agenda.
