Basseterre, St. Kitts- June 6, 2024 – Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the St. Kitts Department of Sports the much-anticipated cricket competitions have returned to primary schools after a prolonged hiatus. This significant initiative underscores the department’s commitment to fostering youth development through sports.

Last weekend, the Conaree Cricket Stadium buzzed with excitement as young cricketers from primary schools across the island took to the field. The Minister of Sports, Hon. Samal Duggins, attended the matches and shared heartfelt remarks about the revival of cricket at the grassroots level.

“It was incredibly heartwarming to witness our young boys participating in cricket once again. Sports serve as a positive outlet for our youth, especially our young men. They offer countless benefits, including social interaction, valuable life lessons, leadership skills, responsibility, and time management,” said Minister Duggins.

The Minister emphasized the physical and mental benefits of sports, highlighting how active involvement can inspire hope for future generations. This sentiment is particularly poignant following the recent selection of the first Kittitian, Mikyle Louis, for the West Indies Cricket team.

“We are on the right track in developing cricket and nurturing our players. Seeing our young athletes engaged in cricket gives me hope that more of them will follow in Mikyle Louis’s footsteps. This journey begins at the grassroots level, and both the Department of Sports and I are fully committed to developing cricket from the ground up,” added the Minister.

The return of cricket to primary schools marks a significant step forward in cultivating a vibrant sports culture in St. Kitts. The Department of Sports is dedicated to providing young athletes with the opportunities and support they need to excel in cricket and beyond.
