(MOA Basseterre, St. Kitts, 02 May 2025):
In an effort to boost marine conservation and promote sustainable fishing practices, the Department of Marine Resources of St. Kitts and Nevis, in collaboration with the Caribbean Aquatic Restoration Effort St. Kitts and Nevis (C.A.R.E.SKN), is gearing up to host a key meeting on Thursday, May 08, 2025, with a focus on farming native Caribbean King Crab. This initiative serves as a means to support coral restoration and advance the development of sustainable fisheries in the region.
Organized in collaboration with regional and international partners including UNOPS, UNDP, GEF Small Grants Programme, and PROCARIBE+, the meeting aims to raise awareness about the project, provide insight into the upcoming Farming King Crab Training, and introduce the public to C.A.R.E.SKN (Caribbean Aquatic Restoration Effort St. Kitts and Nevis).
The Caribbean King Crab is known for its role in controlling harmful algae on coral reefs, which helps support coral growth and resilience. Farming these crabs could significantly enhance reef restoration efforts while providing alternative livelihood options for local fishers in the twin-island federation.
Attendees of the meeting will:
- Learn more about the King Crab farming initiative and its environmental and economic benefits
- Get details on the upcoming hands-on training programs
- Discover how they can get involved through the C.A.R.E.SKN platform
The initiative reflects a growing movement in St. Kitts and Nevis to implement innovative, science-based solutions for marine conservation, aligning with broader climate resilience and sustainability goals.
The meeting is scheduled to be held in the Large Conference Room at the Department of Marine Resources St. Kitts at 10:00 a.m.
