Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 12, 2017 (SKNIS): The Postal Code System or ZIP code, which was launched on World Post Day 2016, is an integral part of the postal service here in St. Kitts and Nevis, as it alleviates several delivery issues faced, says Postmaster General, Dario Gill. Mr. Gill was speaking on Wednesday edition of “Working for You.”

The Postal Code System was implemented to help improve the sorting of mail. It should also assist in finding the mail recipient when the sender provides an incomplete address.

The Postmaster General explained that the postal code system gives a breakdown of the different postal zones for St. Kitts and Nevis.

“For example, if you have a John Doe living at Fern Street, Greenlands, Basseterre, St. Kitts, the postal code would be KN0101. The delivery district would be 01; that would come at the end of the address,” he said.

“It is essentially a postal address system which uses a unique identifier that identifies the addressee’s location and assist in the transmission, sorting and delivery of mail items,” he explained. “It uses a sequence of numbers and letters,” Mr. Gill added.

Mr. Gill said that it has been questioned why St. Kitts and Nevis should have a postal code, given that the islands are small.

“We thought that going forward that it was important to bring on stream the Postal Code System because we are part of the global economy and the way things are going these days in terms of information and communication and the way mails and letters are being delivered, we have to ensure that they are delivered in an efficient manner,” he said.

“In terms of the delivery of the mail from the postman or postlady, depending on how large that delivery district is, there may be two postmen or postladies delivering mail in that area,” said Mr. Gill, emphasizing the postal service’s focus on improved efficiency.

He said that the postal service plans to have more awareness, marketing and dissemination of information to the public about the Post Code System so persons can become more sensitized about the postal codes.
