BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, August 5, 2019 (Press Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister) – Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris is pleased that his Team Unity administration is bringing an end to the ongoing problem of the disruption in traffic due to heavy and dangerous flow of water across the island main road in the area known as “Wash Ghaut” on the outskirts of Cayon.

To address the problem, workers of I&B Construction Ltd are now building culverts and a bridge across the road to effectively address the issue of water flow across the road.

A Culvert is as a closed conduit or tunnel used to convey water from one area to another, normally from one side of a road to the other to help alleviate issues of flooding and reduce erosion.

Prime Minister Harris expressed his pleasure in the work being carried out when he made an impromptu visit to the work site on Sunday, August 04, while on his way to worship. The prime minister also commended the workers for their diligence and professionalism in carrying out this important work.

Work on Wash Ghaut forms part of phase two of the comprehensive Island Main Road Rehabilitation Project currently being undertaken between the areas of Keys and Saddlers Village.

That project is also seeing the construction of sidewalks, installation of improved drainage systems and the paving of the main roads.

Work is being carried out on this phase of the project by a group of local contractors including Boonie’s Construction Company Ltd; Allie’s Construction; Anthony Huggins & Sons; I&B Limited (Trevor Isaac and Leroy Browne); John Boy Construction (Dwight Berry); Stephen’s Construction (Stanford Stephens), and T&G Construction (Troy Flanders).

The rehabilitation of the island main roads is just one of several ongoing multimillion-dollar capital projects being carried out by the Dr. Timothy Harris-led Team Unity Government to significantly enhance the socio-economic development of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Minister responsible for Public Infrastructure, the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, revealed in the Tuesday, July 30, sitting of the National Assembly that, “The total cost of all the capital projects being undertaken at present amount to approximately EC$256,890,000.”

These projects also include the construction of the second cruise pier at Port Zante; the fisheries break water project; and the Old Road Bay Road Rehabilitation project.

Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris converses with workmen of I&B Construction Ltd who are carrying out work on the culverts and bridge at Wash Ghaut.
