Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 27, 2017 (SKNIS): The newly designed St. Kitts and Nevis Customs and Excise website is user friendly and provides useful Customs and Excise related information, said Kennedy De Silva, Deputy Comptroller of Customs in the Office of the Comptroller.

A guest on this week’s “Working For You” radio and television programme on January 25, Mr. De Silva said he is very satisfied with the new website.

“I’m really pleased with the website. The guys have modernized it—they did a lot of tweaking, the presentation, the style, the look, the feel—they spent a lot of time on it,” he said.

One of the features that would be quite useful to the average citizen is the Customs Duty Calculator. This feature, explained Mr. De Silva, is designed to remove the complications of calculating an estimate of Customs charges on items people are importing.

“There are about 350 most popular items that we’ve researched our database to see what (they are) and we put that on the site in alphabetical order. You plug that in—you put in the values and it tells you what the rates of duties are,” De Silva said.

The deputy comptroller also noted that the website is a library of resources, especially for persons wanting to do business in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“If you want to do business in St. Kitts and Nevis and you want to know the import requirements of the Federation, we have our import and export procedures; we have the custom regulations; we have all the other regulations like VAT and the concessionary regulations,” De Silva said. “It’s not a static website.”

The St. Kitts and Nevis Customs Department is a Government agency with the responsibility of protecting the country from potential risks arising from international trade and travel, while facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods across our borders. The department has as its vision: becoming a leading organization through our core values, being flexible to change, embracing new innovations and concepts and investing in the most essential resource through continual training and staff development.

“We will implement strategies to promote public outreach and achieve business results,” the Customs Department declared on its website.
