Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 08, 2017 (SKNIS): The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and by extension the Ministry of Communications will launch five exciting apps free of cost next week, as it celebrates its second anniversary in government said the Honourable Vincent Byron Jr, Attorney General and Minister of Communications, at the “Good Governance and Accountability for Prosperity” town hall meeting on Tuesday, February 08, at the Newtown Community Centre.

“The first app that we will be launching has to do with consumer affairs. Every month the Consumer Affairs Department in the Ministry of Trade goes to every supermarket in St. Kitts and Nevis and collects data as to prices on different brands of food stuffs and groceries,” said the minister of communications. “This free app would allow you at home to do your shopping ahead of time. You can compare prices to see who has the cheapest of a particular brand and you can then beforehand make your shopping list in a way that assists you in terms of managing your households.”

The Attorney General said that another major app that would be launched is one that relates to crime prevention. He said launching such an app is important because the Federation has been experiencing a number of problems in terms of crime.

“People see things and we are working with the police so that you, through your cellphones should be able to see something going wrong on the street or anywhere and quickly take a snapshot and send it to the police and you can do so anonymously,” he said. “In this way, you will not be exposing yourself but you can inform the police and assist in helping us to reduce crime.”

Other apps to be launched are those that relate to the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service (SKNIS), which will allow citizens whether at home or abroad to get news from the government on their mobile devices; an events directory planner to inform persons about government events that are happening; and a directory of government services.

“This is our first step towards a fuller library of apps that would allow you as a citizen to receive information from the government and as the year goes on we will also be introducing some that allow you to participate, to talk to the government and interact with us,” he said, adding that this is one of the government’s citizen e-services that it will be implementing as part of its good governance agenda as the year proceeds.

The apps will be available for download from both the apple and google play stores.
