PROGRESS OF CCTV PROJECT SHOWCASED FOR MINISTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 25, 2017(RSCNPF) Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. The Honourable Timothy Harris was given a project update on the enhanced Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) System being currently installed in several areas during a recent visit to the sites and to the CCTV Monitoring Station in Police Headquarters.

He reported on the progress during a sitting of the National Assembly on Tuesday (May 23).

“We have procured the necessary installations of equipment, as well as training, and these of course are being undertaken by one of the largest and the best firms in this area, VIVOTEK. The VIVOTEK Project in St. Kitts and Nevis is being facilitated by local CCTV expert, Mr. Errol Wilkinson,” said the Minister of National Security. He added, “All of the equipment and furniture for the first phase, which involves Basseterre and its environs among other areas, have been supplied and the CCTV cameras have already been installed at Shadwell and in Conaree.”

Prime Minister Harris hailed the progress thus far and thanked the citizens in the above mentioned communities for their “support in ensuring that they do all that they can to support the project and to maintain the peace and safety of their environment”.

Prime Minister Harris was accompanied by the resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou.  They were escorted through the visit by Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Hilroy Brandy and Head of the Administration, Research and Technology Department Assistant Commissioner of Police Ms Merclyn Hughes.

The enhanced CCTV project is being funded by partnership with the Republic of China (Taiwan) and is goaled towards ensuring continued citizen safety in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Representatives from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force have already traveled to Taiwan and have seen firsthand the operation of the system in a real time, real world, dynamic environment.

Prime Minister Harris expressed his satisfaction with the progress being made, and showed appreciation for the demonstrated capabilities of the system.

Deputy Commissioner Brandy commenting on the visit said, “I was pleased that Prime Minister Harris choose to visit the Telecoms Department and to do a site visit of  the installation of the system.” Deputy Brandy added, “our team was happy to be able to show the PM this new technology,  and I can see he was impressed with what he saw, and all came away in agreement that this system will enhance our ability to patrol many more areas remotely.”

Deputy Brandy also expressed the Police Service’s appreciation for the continued support from the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China (Taiwan) as the Police Service continues efforts to ensure citizen safety in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The work this phase of the enhancements to the CCTV program is entering the operational testing and will be fully operational in the near future.
