Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 23, 2019 (SKNIS): Plans to construct a new home for the emergency services in Sandy Point took another step forward on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, with a ground-breaking ceremony.

Bouncing Hill, Sandy Point, is the location for the two- storey building that will be constructed on an area of 17,920 square feet. Director of the Public Works Department, Cromwell Williams, said that the actual building will be 10,834 square feet in total and will accommodate members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services, and Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise Department. Space will also be assigned to house the District’s Magistrate Court.

The multipurpose building will feature a recreation room, communications room, interview room,
and barracks, as well as two separate laundry rooms and kitchens. There will also be an open deck, and a spacious garage that can comfortably fit two fire appliances or trucks. The yard will be able to accommodate up to 30 parked vehicles.

The construction work will be carried out by Skeete and Associates Ltd. It is expected to cost some $5 million.

Director Williams added that the Public Works Department was looking forward to managing the project and delivering a “fit for purpose” building on time and on budget.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Hilroy Brandy, thanked the government for keeping its commitment to construct a new home for the police officers assigned to the area. He delivered a strong message to community residents that live in the area, saying: “The ground-breaking today solidifies, in a tangible way, our continued commitment to the safety and security of this community and the residents and visitors of the island.”

Acting Commissioner Brandy added: “We are here and stand ready to assist and support you.”

The new building is expected to be completed in February 2020. Officers assigned to the area will continue to function from the temporary location at Station Street, Sandy Point.
