Basseterre, St. Kitts, January 25, 2019 (SKNIS): Thirty high school students will be exposed to the world of work through an internship programme being organized by the Department of Labour in St. Kitts.

The Youth Summer Programme will be geared towards students who are transitioning from high school and enrolled to enter the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. They will be assigned to intern with a public or private sector agency.

“They will learn certain skills set but it is also going to help them to bridge the gap from the world of school to the world of work,” said Labour Commissioner, Shernel James, adding that this should help create more productive workers.

Ms. James noted that youth employment is an issue that is perplexing for leaders around the world.

“Many of them are not gainfully employed. It is not a challenge that is unique to St. Kitts and Nevis. It is challenge that is being experienced within the [Caribbean] region and internationally where there is a problem in finding gainful employment for our youth [which helps] make them more productive citizens,” the labour commissioner stated.

Plans are still being finalised for the roll out of the Youth Summer Programme. More information will be shared at a later date.
