Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 22, 2019 (SKNIS): Along with introducing a new optimization model for garbage collection, the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) is advising the general public to use plastic drums for waste disposal as it seeks to help further the nation’s advancements in environmental cleanliness.

While appearing on the radio programme “Working for You” on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, Senior Manager for Human Resources and Communications at SWMC, Jamella Christopher, said the use of plastic drums is one way the general public can aid in decreasing the number of challenges that are faced with regards to waste collection.

“We are asking persons to please use plastic drums with a wide mouth, so it is easier for staff to dump it,” Ms. Christopher said.

Ms. Christopher said that a challenge that occurs frequently is that of heavy drums. She said drums that have collected water become much heavier for the SWMC staff to lift and properly empty.

“We advocate that you penetrate the bottom of the drum so that it can leak,” Ms. Christopher said.

Ms. Christopher ended by saying that SWMC does not want to leave residents’ waste behind, however, she says that they would be forced to do so if the waste or the waste disposal methods do not meet the standard of the SWMC.
