SOCIAL SECURITY HOSTS VIRTUAL PANEL DISCUSSION

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, 5TH April 2023 — The St Christopher and Nevis Social Security hosted a virtual panel discussion on Tuesday April 4th 2023 as part of its continued observance of its 45th anniversary. The Anniversary is being observed under the theme, TRANSFORM, REFORM, THRIVE, SOCIAL SECURITY 45.

Before the start of the discussion streamed live on Facebook, YouTube and broadcasted live on VON RADIO, Public Relations and Customer Service Manager, Ms Kamilah Lawrence welcomed the audiences both in house and online. Ms Lawrence underscored the importance of the topic The Future of Social Security and its correlation to the theme’s focus of transformation and reform for the sustainability of the fund.

Following the welcome remarks and introduction of the Moderator, Mr Evered Webbo Herbert, Broadcaster, Manager of Von Radio, the presentations begun.

The panelists were Ms Marilyn Johnson, Chief Financial Officer, Social Security Board, Dr Valda Henry, Deputy Governor, Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, and Mr Stewart Haynes, Executive Director, National Insurance Services, St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The first presenter, Ms Johnson, provided a snapshot of the history of the transition from National Provident Fund (NPF) to Social Security. She discussed the fund’s purpose and principles in detail while highlighting the strength of the fund today which stands at $1.7 billion. Ms Johnson expounded further on the challenges faced and the future outlook of Social Security.

Dr Valda Henry through her presentation, discussed the importance of good governance, efficient and innovative administration and the need to place the fiduciary responsibility of the Board above all else to safeguard the system of social security.

Mr Stewart Haynes’ presentation focused on the current trends, and projections of social security systems in the region while emphasizing the means by which longevity can be achieved. Mr Haynes spoke of innovation and digitization of services, greater collaboration across Social Security bodies particularly as it relates to investments and heightened focus on education, engagement and customer service.

Attendees both virtually and in-house were able to ask questions of the panelists.

The Board takes this opportunity to thank the panelists for their informative and engaging presentations and has pledged its commitment to the continuation of the dialogue of Social Security matters through various public engagements such as town hall meetings, stakeholders’ forums and others.
