Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis [Ministry of Health] – The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the public that the recent power outage experienced at the JNF General Hospital on Tuesday April 23, 2024, was part of a controlled, planned simulation exercise aimed at testing our readiness for catastrophic failures. This drill is an integral component of our ongoing commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of all patients under our care.

The purpose of this exercise was to assess and enhance our hospital’s response capabilities in the event of an actual emergency. Such drills are essential for evaluating the robustness of our emergency procedures and mass casualty responsiveness. By simulating conditions of power failure, we can identify strengths and pinpoint areas that require improvement to ensure that our health services can operate effectively, even under the most challenging circumstances.

We understand that the undisclosed nature of the exercise may have caused our patients and their family to raise their levels of concerned, however, this was the intended outcome as it was crucial to maintaining the illusion of an actual emergency of this level. The closer this simulation is to real world conditions, helps us to ensure that patient care remains uncompromised and that our staff is equipped to handle any situation with the highest level of professionalism and efficiency.

The Ministry of Health wishes to thank the public for their understanding and support during this exercise. We appreciate your feedback, which is crucial in helping us refine our emergency protocols. We regret any inconvenience that this exercise may have caused and are grateful for your patience and cooperation.

Thank you once again for your understanding and support.
