JUSTICE MINISTRY SECURES OVER EC$1,000,000 IN INTERNATIONAL GRANTS AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT IN 2025

BASSETERRE (15TH Dec., 2017):  The St. Kitts Ministry of Tourism wowed delegates with a compelling presentation at the Climate Smart Sustainable Tourism Forum on Tuesday at the Ocean Terrace Inn.

Under the topic “Leading the Way-Destination St. Kitts”, the St. Kitts panel highlighted the achievements, practices and roles in sustainable tourism of the Ministry of Tourism, the St. Kitts and Nevis Department of Marine Services and the private and public sectors on St. Kitts.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Mrs. Carlene Henry-Morton, addressed participants on the success of the implementation of the Tourism in Education program in six schools on St. Kitts. The introduction of a community tourism officer and the vital role she plays in engaging community groups and church groups about sustainable tourism practices.

“The goal of Sustainable Tourism is to provide a consistently outstanding visitor experience through the sustainable development of the human, natural and cultural resources in St. Kitts. In order to maximize opportunity, prosperity, and quality of life for the present and future generations of all citizens,” Mrs. Henry-Morton said.

The presentation progressed with the Ministry of Tourism Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Diannille Taylor- Williams, providing a brief history of how sustainable tourism began on St. Kitts-Nevis. She further highlighted the community tourism program Rails to Trails, the various sustainable destination groups that have emerged and the travel philanthropy program called the Heart of St. Kitts Foundation.

Mrs.Taylor-Williams expressed that she wants everyone within the federation of St. Kitts- Nevis to incorporate sustainable tourism into their daily lives.

“My dream is to see everyone working towards a future where all tourism is sustainable tourism. All youth, private and public stakeholders, and communities all bring a collective effort to spread sustainable tourism,” Mrs. Taylor-Williams said.

Marine Management Area and Habitat Monitoring Officer at the St. Kitts and Nevis Department of Marine Services, Ms. Tricia Greaux, ended the presentation by providing a detailed marine zone plan that thoroughly explained all protected zones and practices initiated by Marine Services to protect the natural habitat.

The St. Kitts team ended the presentation by highlighting the Resident Satisfaction Survey and the newly launched Yachting Strategic Plan and Advisory Committee, which caught the attention of some of the delegates who were asking questions.

Climate Smart Sustainable Tourism Forum is being held under the theme “Good For Us, Better for All,” bringing together local, regional and international tourism stakeholders and development agencies. Sessions range from a look at tourism resiliency through climate change adaptation to a road map to disaster management in the Caribbean. Organizing partners include the CTO, the St Kitts Ministry of Tourism, the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council, and Sustainable Travel International.
