Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 23, 2019 (SKNIS): On March 21, 2019, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales returned to the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park after 46 years when he first visited and unveiled a plaque in the presence of nationals Mr. Kenneth Martin, MBE, MH and Mrs Dorothy Martin, MH, and Captain Errol Maynard OBE and Mrs. Louvina Maynard, who were also present on his second visit to meet him. Mr. Martin and Mr. Maynard are former members of the Council of Management of the National Park.

The Prince and his wife Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall are on a 12-day Caribbean tour of Saint Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Cuba and the Cayman Islands, to cement relationships with the Commonwealth. Cuba, which is not a member of the Commonwealth, will receive its first visit from members of the British Royal Family.

The Prince unveiled a plaque in the pelting rain at the Prince of Wales Bastion at Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park to commemorate his 2019 visit and also met the Council of Management of the Park and special invitees. The Council of Management on hand to meet His Royal Highness included Acting President Mr. D Michael Morton, CBE, JP and Mrs Cynthia Morton; Honorary Treasurer Mr. Schneidman CJ Warner; Honorary Secretary Mr. Michael Martin; Mrs. Viola Jacobs; Mr. Anthony Wiltshire and Mrs. Wiltshire; Mr. Basil Woods; Mrs. Gloria Wilkin; Mr. Walford Gumbs; and Mr. David Lake and Mrs. Genelle Lake. He also met with General Manager of Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Mr. Percival Hanley and Mrs. Carol Hanley and Park Manager Mr. Joseph Woodley.

Additionally, he met Lady Rosamund Inniss, whose late husband Sir Probyn Ellsworth Inniss, MBE, was Governor of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla from 1975 to 1980 and then following the separation of Anguilla, the Governor of St. Kitts and Nevis from 1980 to 1981. Sir Probyn served for several years as President of the Brimstone Hill National Park Society and initiated the History and Heritage Week, later History and Heritage Month. He died on March 12, 2017.

School children also were in attendance to greet His Royal Highness and a group of masquerades performed for him despite the heavy rain.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of historical, cultural and architectural significance: a monument to the ingenuity of the British military engineers who designed it and to the skill, strength and endurance of the African slaves who built and maintained it. It is one of the best-preserved fortifications in the Americas.
