Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 09, 2019 (SKNIS): Hundreds of children across St. Kitts will once again learn about the importance of being safe during the holidays and in their everyday lives as the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services (SKNFRS) hosts its 17th Annual Summer Safety Programme.

The popular five-day camp begins on Monday, July 15, 2019, and will be held at the fire stations at Basseterre, Tabernacle and Sandy Point. More than 400 children typically attend the classes that cover fire, traffic, water, and disaster preparedness, as well as crime and violence prevention.

This year, parents have been asked to help share some of the enormous cost of staging the camp by paying a registration fee. Camp Coordinator Fire Sub Station Officer (FSSO) Davron Clarke said the parents embraced the need to help share some of the financial costs that have been carried largely by the SKNFRS over the 17 year history of the programme.

“Other camps are charging $50 and more for registration but we decided on just a $10 fee for registration,” FSSO Clarke stated, noting that the sums collected will assist with the cost of printing approximately 500 T-shirts for campers, camp staff and other contributors in St. Kitts and in Nevis.

As is the norm, sessions are currently taking place in Nevis, one week ahead of the camp in St. Kitts. About 85 children are attending the programme at the Jessups Community Centre.

FSSO Clarke encouraged parents in St. Kitts, who wish to have their child/children attend the safety programme next week, to complete the registration as soon as possible. Forms are available at all fire stations.

The theme for the 17th Annual Summer Safety Programme is “Building for a Safer Tomorrow by Preparing Our Children Today.”
