“The Diamondback Squid is not something that most people go to the fisheries to purchase,” she said. “The Department of Marine Resources is therefore, using this opportunity to highlight our underutilized species and so the Diamondback Squid was identified as one of those things that we can actually use for food,” said Ms. Flanders.

The endeavor, a brainchild of the Department of Marine Resources, saw members from the Extension Services Division, under the leadership of Fisheries Assistant Kharim Saddler, investing hours in capturing these squids. Their efforts were complemented by local fisherman, Darwin “Shottie” Francis, who imparted his seasoned techniques for a fruitful squid fishing experience.
In addition to the showcase, a dedicated Diamondback Squid processing workshop took place on October 17. This session enabled the technical staff to understand the nuances of cleaning the squid and preparing it for distribution.

Chaira Flanders and Hon. Samal Duggins

Having witnessed the intricate preparation process, the Honourable Samal Duggins, Minister of Agriculture, expressed his eagerness to taste the final product. He said witnessing the hands-on training and the diligence that goes into preparing the squid has only heightened his anticipation to savor it.

Highlighting the broader vision for the Diamondback Squid, Ms. Flanders said that the aim is to incorporate the Diamondback Squid in the value-added products available at Basseterre and Old Road Fisheries Complex.
