Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 20, 2023 (SKNIS): In a ceremony highlighting the relentless efforts of individuals who play a pivotal role in maintaining food security in St. Kitts and Nevis, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Marine Resources and Cooperatives held its Annual Food Heroes Prize giving ceremony at the CUNA Conference Room on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

The event was a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of the Federation’s crop and livestock farmers, fishers, and cooperative societies that strive for excellence and innovation in their respective fields.

The Gideon Force Agricultural Cooperative was bestowed with the title of the Cooperative Society of the Year. The strides in improvement were evident as Capisterre Fishermen Marketing & Supplies Cooperative secured the Most Improved Cooperative Society recognition. Taking a modern approach to agriculture, The St. Kitts Farmers’ Cooperative was honoured as the Most Innovative Cooperative Society.

Gregory O-Loughlin was recognized and awarded the FAO Fisher of the Year for 2023, while Leon Anthony was awarded the 2023 Crop Farmer of the Year for his exceptional dedication to the field. The indispensable role of livestock farming was celebrated as Marvin Harrigan was recognized as the Livestock Farmer of the Year.

This year’s event, a significant part of the 2023 World Food Day week of activities, was attended by the Honourable Samal Duggins, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Marine Resources and Cooperatives. Also in attendance were Miguel Flemming, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, distinguished members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, the backbone of our food security – our farmers and fisherfolk, and the committed staff of the agriculture department.

The Ministry continues to stand firm in its support and recognition of these heroes who work tirelessly to ensure food security and promote sustainable and innovative agricultural practices in St. Kitts and Nevis.
