Basseterre, St. Kitts, October 24, 2023 (SKNIS): The United Nations (UN) Lighting Ceremony at Government Headquarters in St. Kitts and Nevis, held in observance of UN Day (October 24), was made even more memorable with an awe-inspiring performance by J’Kuan Kion and J’Kuane Kiondre Roache, students at the Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School.

The Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the young talented boys. He particularly noted the presence and support of their guardian, emphasizing the crucial role of the family unit in nurturing and guiding the youth.

R-L: Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew with J’Kuan Kion, J’Kuane Kiondre Roache and their guardian

“What I loved about it is that their guardian was here accompanying them, making sure that they are well-positioned and supported by a family unit,” remarked Dr. Drew.Cosbert Woods, the UN Country Coordination Officer for St. Kitts and Nevis, further resonated with the sentiment.

“This is exactly what the United Nations is about – inclusivity, diversity and talent and showing that we leave no one behind,” said Mr. Woods.

The commitment to diversity and inclusion is deeply ingrained in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With SDG 10 advocating for reduced inequalities and SDG 5 championing gender equality, the SDGs underscore the importance of social, economic, and political inclusiveness. These objectives are further augmented by SDG 4, which emphasizes quality education for all, and SDG 8, which calls for fair work conditions and equal pay. Diversity and inclusion are not mere buzzwords but foundational pillars in building a just and sustainable world.

The outstanding performance of J’Kuan and J’Kuane serves as a shining example of the potential every individual possesses when given equal opportunities and the right support system.
